Course Outline

Objectives:

  • Explain encapsulation, de-encapsulation, and modularity within the TCP/IP protocol stack.
  • Identify and interpret the fields and flags contained in the IP header.
  • Characterise IP address classes A, B, and C.
  • Apply subnet masks to determine the network portion of an IP address.
  • Distinguish between classful and classless IP addressing schemes.
  • Describe the functioning of IP routers and the application of static and dynamic routing.
  • Compare and contrast distance vector (RIP) and link-state (OSPF) routing protocols.
  • Elaborate on the concept of IP subnetworking.
  • Explain supernetting, VLSM, and CIDR.
  • Describe ICMP and utilise ping and traceroute for network connectivity testing.
  • Explain the role of DHCP in dynamic IP address assignment.
  • Demonstrate how ARP maps IP addresses to MAC addresses.
  • Describe the function of DNS within TCP/IP networks.
  • Identify and interpret the fields and flags in TCP and UDP headers.
  • Explain how TCP provides end-to-end reliability over an unreliable IP network.
  • Describe the operation of congestion avoidance in TCP/IP networks.
  • Explain Transport Layer Security (TLS).
